It is often said that drawing a distinction between Koreans and Japanese is not easy because both share similar genetic attributes. Nevertheless, the factor that distinguishes one from the other can only be discussed in a realm that is deeper and more profound than that aforementioned: the characteristic of a people. Koreans underwent a flurry of both domestic and diplomatic changes over the past century, marked by divisions between regions, such as that between Honam and Yungman, and between classes, the rich and the poor. On the other hand, Modern Japanese history is characterized by imperialism, which was materialized by its colonialism in Korea in the first half of the 20th century. 

 Such historic backgrounds manifest themselves in the way each reacts to social affairs in their home country. In the case of Koreans, when faced with issues that may have profound effects on their lives, Koreans tend not to trust their own government. One can attribute this to the ‘anti-government spirit’ of the so called ‘486 generations’, who played a leading role in the democratization of Korea after decades of dictatorship tainted with a shroud of terror and disbelief. They still regard government as an oppressor, not a cooperator with whom they could otherwise indulge in the fruits of success and development of the society.
